I’ve got a theory about why Pepa Madrigal looks so different from her siblings!
It involves something I will be calling the “Grand-Madrigal Gene”.
It’s clear when you look at Julieta and Bruno seem to have mixed genes from their parents. Why does it seem like Pepa doesn’t have those genes?
This is my theory.
What if Pepa got her looks from her grandmother on Alma’s side or Pedro’s side of the family who also had fair skin, curly auburn hair and green eyes?
I know their parents are never shown in the movie (we don’t even know if they had siblings). Just hear me out on this.
Like I said before, Julieta and Bruno have mixed genes between their parents and look like both of them as well. Pepa’s the only one who doesn’t because she has the Grand-Madrigal Gene.
In case you haven’t realized, I basically put Grandma and Madrigal together when thinking of this, because it makes sense.
You know who else was born with the Grand-Madrigal Gene?
Isabela Madrigal! She looks so similar to Alma when she was younger.
It even plays a role in why she was Alma’s favorite and golden child for so long.
So it is possible that Pepa has the Grand-Madrigal Gene as well.
I will now explain what I think the Grand-Madrigal Gene is.
The Grand-Madrigal Gene basically guarantees that if the only kid or oldest kid among their siblings in the Madrigal family were grow up, get married & have at least three kids, one of those kids is going to have a strong resemblance to their grandmother.
Why I think this is because Julieta is the oldest of her siblings & Isabela is her oldest daughter. Who just so happens to look like Julieta’s mother Alma.
Side note: I think the first born having the Grand-Madrigal Gene is quite rare. Which I think Isabela is seen as perfect by Alma & everyone else in Encanto (one of the reasons anyway).Isabela probably thought she was just as unlucky as her father if she were found out more about this gene playing a factor in why she’s had so much expectations placed upon her. But that for an AgustÃn Theory I’m saving for another day.

If you look at the Madrigals who were born months to years after Isabela, they all obviously look like different mixes of their parents.
Since Julieta’s the oldest of her siblings, she was the one to pass down the Grand-Madrigal Gene to just Isabela. Pepa is Alma’s middle child, who was born with the Grand-Madrigal Gene, but doesn’t pass it on to one of her kids.
Another thing I gotta bring up involving this theory of mine.
Dolores is Pepa’s first born…
As well as the only 3rd generation Madrigal with a love interest in the movie…
If Dolores and Mariano decide to have at least three kids when they’re married, one of those kids is gonna look like Pepa if it’s not their first child!
