twilight: how long does it take to hallucinate from sleep deprivation?

dash: i think-

sunset: seventy-two hours.

aj: how do you know?

sunset: there’s a clown behind you.

Fun fact, in humans the 72 hour mark with zero sleep is the point at which you just die. Or at a minimum suffer permanent brain damage.

However most people are incapable of reaching this point without like, being super drugged, because there’s a thing that happens called “microsleep” where you black out for like 10-30 seconds without even noticing and it doesn’t make you feel any less tired or prevent hallucinations or whatever but it does give your brain just enough of a chance to flush out a little bit of the toxins you’ve built up and keep you alive a little longer. It can also cause you to crash your car, which is why you don’t drive if you’ve been up for more than like, 36 hours.

There’s a general mental decline that starts at about 24 hours awake, with effects that range from just thinking slower and making dumber decisions and getting headaches to sorta aura/mirage effects in your vision, but if/when those mature into full hallucinations is unique to each individual.

“the 72 hour mark with zero sleep is the point at which you just die”

Where are you getting that from?

He stayed up for exactly 72 hours and died and took notes

I can confirm the microsleep thing at least, that happened to me at school all the time (and occasionally work). I’d just be sitting there, trying to take notes, then suddenly my head would jerk up and the teacher would be talking about something else. It’s weird as fuck.

Never hallucinated though. Probably.

I’ve done that in church. I’ve taken to writing in a notebook to stay awake.
