While I enjoy many of the Fleischer Bros animated “Popeye” cartoons, they and all the other film and tv adaptations give little hint of the rich characterizations of the original E. C. Segar cartoon strips.
One example is “Olive Oyl”. Segar’s strips often parodied the “Damsel in Distress” cliche, which the animated cartoons were to unfortunately embrace and use ad nauseam. In the original Popeye universe, if you couldn’t have Popeye himself on your side in a fight, Olive Oyl was probably your next best choice, as she was almost as tough as he was and at least as resourceful.
