frenemies
they could have been besties
That’s the thing about Debbie.
If she didn’t deceive them, they would have loved for Fester to marry her homicidal ass. She would have totally helped Mortician join the rest of the witches on their hellish crusade
Debbie didn’t even have to marry Fester. She didn’t have to lie to him and deceive him for his money. She actually probably could have lived comfortably as the kids’ Nanny. The Addams probably would have treated her like family.
Hell, they probably would’ve helped her find a rich husband to marry and murder.
They’d laugh it off every time she murdered another husband and then find her another one until she found one she actually liked.
She could have been a fucking Addams.
Like Cousin Itt’s wife, Margaret Alford-Addams. She’s the widow of their shady lawyer, Tully, from the first movie. Doesn’t fit their aesthetic in the slightest: out-of-date helmet hair, chipper and chatty, wears pink.
They adore her. She’s at all their get-togethers, even smaller close-family-only parties like Halloween. Just thrilled Cousin Itt, the incorrigible ladies’ man, finally found someone to love till death (maybe). They don’t even hold her late-husband’s crimes against her.
Though considering she rather vanished from the movie after meeting Itt, they probably knew she hadn’t been involved or even complicit. She and Itt are implied to have started an affair while Tully was busy (“No, we mustn’t” at the party followed immediately by “Call me!”). She may even have left her husband outright during the latter half of the film.
Point being, “fitting in” isn’t even a requirement for becoming an Addams. Debs really schemed her way out of a good thing.
