A Brief Introduction To The Irish Pantheon:
I did this kind of thing a while ago, where I wanted to learn about a certain something and so I made a Tumblr post about it, because Tumblr always seems to motivate me, for some reason? So here, have an introduction to Irish mythology. Before I begin, let me say: Irish…
I like this post you made . Information in the linked to post contradicts information in the post i am replying to though.
Namely, I agree with the linked to post concerning deification of the Tuatha De Dannan. one of the reason i have trouble agreeing that the Tuatha were deities to the Irish is that the Irish myth involving their coming to ireland includes them claiming victory over the Tuatha in order to obtain control of the Island.
It’s really hard to imagine a culture who believes a group they bested is also their Gods.
So I would concur that the Irish Celts did not view the Tuatha as deities.
The second thing I like is more personal. My own gnosis is that the Tuatha and the Sidhe are two distinct groups. So I appreciate that these sources gave at least a small nod concerning potential separation of the two.
I think that the idea of the Tuatha becoming “Sidhe” can be rooted in treating “Sidhe” more as a place. I.E. The Aes Sidhe are one group associated with a place and later the Tuatha also became Associated with a place. “Sidhe” then becomes the indicator that the two groups are now a part of “sidhe” or to put it another way, they are “underhill.”
One of the reasons i feel that the Sidhe are a distinct group is the striking similarities between them and the huldrafolk of the Faroe Islands. Fascinatingly, the Tuatha are said to have traveled to the Northern islands of the world where they learned sorceries and such. Well, who taught those sorceries to them…perhaps huldrafolk/Aes Sidhe??
