I have a bit of a theory as to why Mettaton and only Mettaton is such a tragic figure in Deltarune compared to the other Undertale cameos instead of something more like his brash, arrogant and theatrical Undertale self-

Because at the heart of his Undertale story is a story about someone being able to shape his own destiny and live the kind of life he wants to for better and for worse. Something Kris very much can’t do and other characters such as Seam emphasize. It doesn’t matter what you’d choose to make of yourself free of all strings, you can’t.

This also comes up in the way Spamton was pretty much given Mettaton’s Undertale story without the transgender overtones. He was given a body he wanted to use to get back to being a [BIG SHOT]…and only suffered further madness and entrapment in his role because of it.

So in a way I guess we should be thanking Spamton. Had he not had the narrative make an example of him as to what happens when you try to defy your role, a Mettaton that fell into the Dark World and found NEO would have ABSOLUTELY suffered the same storyline fate for trying to chase his dream.

Because no one can choose who they are in this world, after all. And Undertale Mettaton is literally completely antithetical to this.
