Black history month day 5: Blues musician and social activist Daryl Davis.

Daryl Davis is probably one of the best examples of “kill ‘em with kindness”. He has developed personal friendships with many klansmen, and thus challenged their prejudices (often born of deep brainwashing from an early age). His engagement with the KKK almost completely dismantled their presence in the state of Maryland. He has a whole collection of klan robes given to him by members who have chosen to leave the klan upon meeting and interacting with him. Here’s a quote from him about one of his interactions with a member who informed him that black people all carried a violence gene: “After a time I said, ‘You know, it’s a fact that all white people have within them a gene that makes them serial killers. Name me three black serial killers.’ He could not do it. I said ‘you have the gene. It’s just latent.’ He said, ‘Well that’s stupid.’ I said, ‘It’s just as stupid as what you said to me.’ He was very quiet after that and I know it was sinking in.”
