a guy just argued against socialism by saying “why would you spend years becoming a doctor to earn the same wage as everyone else?” oh idk maybe i’d like to save people’s lives?? maybe you can have genuine interest in something beyond money?? honestly what is wrong with our culture if the only motivation to get out of bed is greed? capitalism has such devastating consequences on our sense of self and our values, and honestly we don’t talk about that enough
all the people in the tags saying they’d like to be a barista or do cleaning or something like that! and who are made fun of for it! are so precious! i hope we can build a world where u can just.. choose. and not end up in poverty for it.
also imagine a world where everybody genuinely liked what they did.
Yeah this is why everyone thinks you guys are morons. You seriously think there’s anyone out there happy to clean shit out of pipes, or work in 130 degree boiler houses, or any number of other jobs that people only do because it pays better. Just say you want free shit.
“Imagine a world where everybody genuinely liked what they did.”
And what about the jobs that nobody likes to do, but are nevertheless required for the world to function? What if nobody wants to do the dirty, dangerous drudgery? Sewers are still going to need to be worked on, ditches are still going to need to be dug, phone lines are still going to need repair and maintenance. And these are typically not jobs that people do for the love of the work. So when people realize that they could have the same standard of living being a barista or a house cleaner, as they would have mucking out septic tanks all day, how are you going to find septic tank muckers?
The only option is either to coerce people, which requires a powerful state apparatus, thereby defeating the whole point of socialism; or to reintroduce the concept that certain jobs receive better compensation for labor, and once again creating a class system, thereby defeating the whole point of socialism.
I clean my church twice a week and I’m paid for it. I do it enjoy it mostly but if I’m completely honest, I’m glad I was being paid for that time I had to clean up puke or those times where I’m trying to clean on Saturday and people won’t stop getting in the way of me mopping.
Even the most charitable people get there patience tested and need more motivation like money. And the general rule of capitalism is pay for the labor people do whether or not the people enjoyed doing the labor
Plus there are jobs that require a lot more energy and time, so people who do those jobs should be paid more by default. I’m not gonna pay a trauma surgeon like I’d pay an average Joe working behind a desk in accounting on a 9-5 work day.
