I wasn’t the one making fun of weird kids in elementary/middle school. I was the weird kid who got made fun of.

All this aside, I don’t want children being killed, period. Having autism or Down Syndrome or any learning or intellectual disability does not make someone an exception to this principle.

I don’t have to be your friend to not want you dead.

Le Guin wrote a YA novel where the inciting incident doesn’t really happen until page 75 in a 200 page book but because she wrote it in such a way that the “conflict” wasn’t so much the point as the journey and the characters, it flows perfectly fine.

Tell your story the way it ought to be told, not the way some grouchy academic structuralist says it should be told. If you tell it with intent, and meaning, and purpose, and you stick to those things and stay true to them, then the story will shine for the people it’s meant to shine for.
