Watching Encanto for the second time in as many days and I’m loving looking at Mirabel’s clothes! It’s all crewel work!
Crewel work is embroidery done with wool yarn instead of floss! It’s raised and often more textured than thread based stuff. Here’s an example off the wikipedia page:
Meanwhile there’s some really nice whitework embroidery on the smocked base of Luisa’s blouse, which i find suits her more subtle elegance, as opposed to Mirabel’s exuberant colours (screaming “notice me” in a family valued for their magical gifts as the only one without”) or Isabela’s very monocoloured and frothy swiss dot and applique lace gown (restrained to what she thinks others desire of her instead of her own interests)
Here’s some whitework embroidery that’s as geometric as Luisa’s (forgive the watermark):
And here’s some 3d applique lace that calls to mind Isabela’s dress:
Ans this is swiss dot! It’s what her cap sleeves are made of!
Meanwhile her new dress seems to be less textured, elegant lace than it is a smooth and high colour thing, because she can finally express herself!
And that’s just with the three sisters! There’s also Abuela’s butterfly chatelaine as the matron of the house, and the fact that Mirabel and Bruno both share the colour green in their glasses and poncho respectively, and that they have the same little curl in the same place on their forehead!
Agustin, and Julieta: Constantly show how much they love their daughters and stand up to Abuela for Mirabel
Pepa and Felix: Constantly show how much they love their kids and even show themselves to be tired of Abuela’s shit
People (mostly nonpoc) for some reason: They are terrible and abusive parents and don’t deserve their children and Bruno needs to run away with then and adopt them and become their new dad !
Like seriously, this shit is tiring and I don’t know why they try so hard to villainize the parents when they’re good and loving parents
This is just me thinking out loud, but after watching Encanto for the 7th time, I realized something: Dolores didn’t know about Bruno’s vision but Luisa did. When Mirabel asks Dolores if she heard anything about the magic, she says:
“The only one worried about the magic is you… and the rats talking in the walls.”
but then she adds:
“Oh, and Luisa. I heard her eye twitching, all night.”
Meaning Dolores has heard and/or seen Luisa be nervous about something to know that when her eye twitches that’s what it means. So when Mirabel goes to talk to Luisa, she says:
“-but I heard the grown-ups once, before tio Bruno left, he had like some terrible vision about it.”
So Luisa heard the adults talk about the vision but Dolores didn’t, because if she did she would’ve told Mirabel about it when she asked. So when Mirabel blurts:
“I… broke into Bruno’s tower, found his last vision, the family’s in trouble, the magic is dying, the house is breaking, Luisa’s gift is fading, and I think it’s all because of- me?”
that’s the first time Dolores ever hears of the vision and reacts how her character would react in that situation imo. Which is ironic because Dolores sings this in WDTAB:
“grappling with prophecies they couldn’t understand”
and then ends up misinterpreting what Mirabel and Agustin said:
“Mirabel found Bruno’s vision, she’s in it, she’s gonna destroy the magic, and now we’re all doomed!”
