for all the bad things about the internet, one thing i like about it is how it has so effectively led to an explosion of art and artistry in creative hobbies that i dont think we really appreciate enough

Like, if you look at any individual hobby from music to soap-making, to gardening, to knitting to painting, you’ll find that in the last ten to fifteen years, there has actually been a lot of innovation, because people have been pushing the boundaries of their mediums to crazy extents, which was of course possible before, but which has been thoroughly facilitated by people just being so much more able to share their experimentations, and look up new techniques. Information and materials which would have been incredibly difficult and expensive to gather back in the days is now a lot more affordable and easy to access.

On the one hand, it has unfortunately heightened expectations for people just starting out, or trying to have fun. On the other hand, there is something magical about one of my grandmother telling me about the new gardening tips she learned on youtube while the other uses duolinguo to try and learn russian to read those beautiful russian knitting patterns she fell in love with on pinterest. And remember those nigerian boys who made sci-fi short films for fun? There is something great about being able to look at and be inspired by art all day, every day. to be able to look at things and have the tools necessary to tell yourself “I can try to do that too”
