He was only a little Kettle for now.
The lad was born on a warm summer afternoon. The air was muggy and humid, with the clouds gathering overhead… It looked like rain, a sign of good fortune for all manner of liquid receptacles.
“What should his name be?”
“Hmmmm… Steamson?”
“Ugh, no that was your grandfather’s name. I hated your grandfather, racist old tin can.”
“Ok, I’ll give you that.” A round of chuckles filled the room as the baby shifted in its swaddling.
“Hmmmm… Tray?”
“No, too short. And Tray is such a muscleheaded name…”
“…I like the name Earnest.”
“It is a good name. Very steadfast sounding. Reliable.”
“Suppose that will have to do.”
The house rumbled and shuddered slightly. Thunder. And yet the baby didn’t seem too perturbed.
“Look at that! Less than an hour old and he’s not even frightened of the storm.” A shadow passed over the little kettle, as a larger hand stroked the top, near his lid… “What a brave little chap. Hello, Earnest…”
