Fatal 2012 Attack on Texas Lesbian Couple ‘Not A Hate Crime’
David Strickland was arrested in connection to a violent attack on a lesbian couple.Strickland is charged in a violent attack that seriously injured Kristene Chapa, 18, and that killed her girlfriend, Mollie Olgin, 19. Here’s how the attack is described by the Corpus Christi Caller Times:
“Mollie Olgin and her girlfriend, Mary Kristene Chapa, were forced to duct tape each other’s eyes and mouths June 22, 2012, according to and arrest affidavit. They were then sexually assaulted and shot in the back of the head at a Portland park, according to the affidavit. Olgin did not survive.” It took two years before he was apprehended by the U.S. Marshals Service Lone Star Fugitive Task Force.
Protestors assembled in front of the San Patricio County Courthouse on Friday to object to the decision not to try the case as a hate crime. District Attorney Michael Welborn told Janine Reyes of KZTV10 that “we have found no evidence” indicating “this was in any way involving a hate crime.”
Mary Kristene Chapa survived but she needs a lot of physical therapy to regain her full mobility.
“She suffers paralysis after being shot in the head two years ago. Miraculously, Kristene survived this horrific crime—which may have been a hate crime—but she continues her fight to live a normal life. One of her goals is to be able to hold a cup or pick things up with her left hand. Her family must pay out-of-pocket for all medical expenses insurance will not cover, including the more aggressive therapies that she needs to regain her independence. As an outpatient, Kristene will have to travel for over three hours on Sundays to Houston, where she’ll need housing Monday through Wednesday before making the return trip. Her family will acquire lodging, gas, food, and related expenses in addition to her mounting medical bills. Your donation to Kristene’s medical fund is profoundly appreciated.”
BOOSTING TO HIGH HEAVEN.
Violence against dykes. Please help Kristene.
Even if this wasn’t a hate crime on the basis of the victims being lesbian (I’m convinced that it was, but let’s just say it wasn’t) it was STILL a hate crime against women.
ALL rapes are hate crimes against women, and should be tried as such. The ONLY REASON that hate crimes against women are not recognized as being such is that HATE FOR WOMEN IS SEEN AS THE NORMAL, DEFAULT POSITION UNDER THE LAW.
NEVER forget that women DO not have equal protection under the law, EVEN UP TO AND INCLUDING THE CONSTITUTION. The constitution WAS NOT WRITTEN to include women and to this day we are not equal citizens under the law.
