Hello! I think this ask may help answer your question.

Scripture doesn’t have to directly use the word “transgenderism” for us to know that transgenderism is against His will. We are all created by Him with a specific gender. Purposely dressing to appear as the opposite gender or going so far as to surgically attempt to change that gender is against His will and how He created a person. Like I mentioned in that ask I provided the link to, scripture makes it clear that we are not to dress or make ourselves appear as the opposite gender. So the first point to consider is that many people who identify as transgender do not necessarily have cosmetic surgery, but rather, choose to leave their genitals alone and decide to only dress in a way to appear the opposite sex (e.g.: women binding their chests to appear more masculine; men wearing wigs, makeup, and dresses to appear as a woman, etc). So we can definitely see how this portion of scripture directly applies in this scenario.

Second, keep in mind that since scripture says intentionally dressing/appearing as the opposite gender is considered an abomination by Him, it’s safe to make the assumption that surgically altering one’s genitals and/or other areas of the body to appear as the opposite gender definitely falls into the same category as an even more extreme and permanent form of making oneself appear as the opposite gender. Even though the verse itself doesn’t talk about genital reassignment surgery, we can see that it’s the same concept. In our current world, various cosmetic procedures have been developed to alter a person’s body to appear as the opposite gender. Back in the days when Biblical scripture came into existence, things such as cosmetic surgery procedures or even the term “transgender” itself didn’t exist. However, gender dysphoria always existed; it’s a product of this broken world. There were always individuals who attempted to appear as the opposite gender and they did the best they could with what was available to them – which in the days Biblical scripture was documented, I would assume they were limited to just wearing clothes of the opposite gender. And because cross dressing was likely the most common way people embraced transgenderism back then, it makes sense that the verse exists specifically telling people not to cross dress because it is unacceptable to Him.

The take home point from this verse in Deuteronomy is that the act of trying to alter one’s gender is an abomination to Him – so we can draw the conclusion any measures taken with the motivation of altering one’s gender would be considered unacceptable in His eyes.

So, this thread of thought hits me hard as a religious person. While the author is correct about most current Bibles not containing the word “transgender”, I do believe in what Jesus said in regards to gender in Matt. 19:12. “…some eunuchs, which were so born from their mother’s womb: and there are some eunuchs, which were made eunuchs of men: and there be some eunuchs, which have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven’s sake.” (KJV). I believe that this word eunuchs was the word that the Bible authors used for our modern day word transgender. (See also: dinosaur not in the Bible, but dragon is, unicorn, etc.) Jesus goes further on with the subject by his many statements about what does nature teach you? The whole of creation speaks to the abundant love of the Creator, and He is not concerned about my genitalia…Matt. 22:30 “…for in the resurrection they…are as the angels of God in heaven.” Don’t follow dogma blindly, but search the scriptures daily, to see if such things be true. Being transgender is a medical condition, just the same as being born with a cleft palate or autism or being diagnosed with cancer. A medical condition that is treatable. To whoever wrote this thread, shame on you! Finish reading your Bible before you come back to the table to talk. And, don’t forget to give references next time, because you do a great disservice to the Bible when you don’t…plus you just look lazy when you don’t.

I did provide a reference. In the first sentence of my ask, I provided the link to an original ask I answered on this topic which directly included the Bible verse I’m referring to in this response. When I answer asks on topic I already discussed and provide a link, I assume those reading will look at the link I provide as well as the new response I’m writing. Before you accuse me of something, I ask that you please at least read the entirety of what I’ve written. It seems from your comment here that you didn’t, which makes me wonder how much of the rest of my response you read.

But I’ll repeat the verse again here since you asked for it:

“A woman shall not wear a man’s garment, nor shall a man put on a
woman’s cloak, for whoever does these things is an abomination to the
LORD your God.” – Deuteronomy 22:5

Regarding what you said about eunuchs, eunuchs are not the equivalent of transgender individuals. A eunuch is a man who does not have testicles. In the verses you quoted, Jesus was referring to three scenarios of a eunuch: naturally born, forced, and living like a eunuch by choice. It’s important also to recognize that Jesus was using the concept of eunuchs to illustrate a point about marriage (which I will get into more later).

First scenario, males can be naturally born without testicles as a result of birth defect. The second scenario is they could be castrated as a result of someone cutting their testicles off (a case of becoming a forced eunuch). In the days of the Biblical times, royalty frequently turned individuals under their rule into eunuchs. Rulers often castrated their servants/subordinates with the goal of asserting dominance over them and keeping them under control. For example, Queen Ester is documented in the Bible as having her own eunuchs.

The third scenario is what you could describe as living like a eunuch. In verse 10, the disciples opened the discussion with Jesus and they commented that it seems to them that it is better not to marry. Jesus replied by mentioning eunuchs in the context of marriage because eunuchs typically did not marry due to their impotence and inability to reproduce. So after mentioning the examples of natural and forced eunuchs, He mentioned, “..there are eunuchs who have made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven” in verse 12. “Made themselves eunuchs” means individuals who choose to live like eunuchs – meaning they choose not to get married so that they have more time to devote to serving God as a single person. Paul also discusses this topic in 1 Corinthians 7.

Jesus was not referring to men literally cutting off their own testicles for the sake of the kingdom of heaven and He was not encouraging people to change their gender. This doesn’t fit the context at all of what Jesus was discussing/the point He was making in that passage and if it meant what you think it does, that would contradict the clear command in the verses above from Deuteronomy that say we are not to make ourselves appear as the opposite gender.

Regarding the verse from Matthew 22:30 you mentioned, it says at the resurrection people will not marry or be married and we will be like angels in heaven. This does not mean we become genderless when we get our resurrected bodies. After Christ was resurrected, He still was and is male. And since the verse mentions we will be like angels, it should be noted that angels are frequently referred to throughout scripture with masculine pronouns. Stating there is no marriage in heaven means that there will be no sexual intercourse or procreation in heaven. It doesn’t mean we lose our identity and the gender God gave to us.

Looking at your profile to reblog your response from you, I see that you are transgender. So I understand that this is a personal topic for you and I know that I could never understand the pain you have experienced (and maybe still do) from feeling you are born the wrong gender. It would be much easier to tell you it’s not against His will to change one’s gender, but I can’t lie to you because I care about His truth and your eternal well being. I can’t endorse a lie just because it sounds nice.

You’re right that gender dysphoria is a medical condition. And if there were treatments for it that did not involve going against His will, I would have no issue with it. You mention cancer and a cleft palate as examples, but it is not sinning to take chemotherapy/radiation for cancer or to have facial reconstructive surgery to repair a cleft palate. But taking measures to appear as the opposite gender and going so far as to create a vagina out of a penis (or vice versa) to cope with transgenderism is in defiance of His will.

I hope you decided to read everything I wrote. Even if you disagree still, I’m here for you if you ever need me.

Thank you for your grace. When people who disagree, as above, turn to shaming and slurs, it is a wonderful example to see a response like yours.
