Not only is it not random, but it’s not anyone’s fault. For decades, parents have been given contradictory advice about how to prevent SIDS, leaving them to feel guilty when their baby dies despite their best efforts. But if we know it’s caused by a chemical deficiency, that means it’s not your fault, and there’s not anything you should or could have done differently.
Very important!
This is awesome news. It hopefully means we can get tests and hopefully a treatment soon!
Safe sleep practices STILL matter, because babies without this enzyme deficiency can still die from suffocation if their sleep environment isn’t safe. But for the families who did everything right and still lost their baby, this is some vindication and closure.
The biggest thing I’m hoping for from this is that, once there’s a way to screen for it, parents can set up a safe sleeping environment for their baby and then relax, not needing all those fancy monitors or spending sleepless nights watching their baby breathe.
This amazing! What a miracle!
