Another contribution to my Space Mermaid creatures:
Space mermaid kings, also known as space mermen, are not as prolific as their female counterparts. Commonly referred to as princes, space mermen’s sole motive in life is to find a newly hatched queen and to sire her kingdom to be. Space mermen will live their first part of their lives within their mother’s hive but are expelled upon sexual maturity. During their adolescents, space mermen will live in small groups, usually made up of brothers but will often form larger pods of other space mermen.
Nearly all kingdoms are ruled by a single queen yet ruling space mermaid kings, though rare, are not unheard of. In most cases it is the result of a queen dying. He will rule until a predestined queen daughter is awaken and made to take her mother’s seat. If no queen daughters were laid before the queens death the hive will become a “Determinus Hive”. A Determinus Hive is when the life expectancy is determinded by the existing number of workers, soldiers etc in the hive. Due to the fact that no other daughters will be born, the hive number will slowly but surely drop as they die off. Rendering the hive’s life finite. Another way in which a hive can have a ruling king is through an “Aquired Hive.” This is a hive that a rogue king, usually older, stole from a young/new queen. He will kill off the “in house” king and take over as sole sire. He will then take control over the queen.
Space mermen have been known to mate with non space mermaids. While uncommon in uncivilized hives, kingdoms that have been civilized will produce civilized males. Upon their departure from their mother hive these males may end up procreating with the dominant race of their occupied planet. In nearly all cases these males will abandon their brides and seek out space mermaid queens to build an empire with.
