why do black people use you in the wrong context? such is “you ugly” instead of “you’re ugly” I know u guys can differentiate, it’s a nuisance
you a bitch
It’s called copula deletion, or zero copula. Many languages and dialects, including Ancient Greek and Russian, delete the copula (the verb to be) when the context is obvious.
So an utterance like “you a bitch” in AAVE is not an example of a misused you, but an example of a sentence that deletes the copular verb (are), which is a perfectly valid thing to do in that dialect, just as deleting an /r/ after a vowel is a perfectly valid thing to do in an upper-class British dialect.
What’s more, it’s been shown that copula deletion occurs in AAVE exactly in those contexts where copula contraction occurs in so-called “Standard American English.” That is, the basic sentence “You are great” can become “You’re great” in SAE and “You great” in AAVE, but “I know who you are” cannot become “I know who you’re” in SAE, and according to reports, neither can you get “I know who you” in AAVE.
In other words, AAVE is a set of grammatical rules just as complex and systematic as SAE, and the widespread belief that it is not is nothing more than yet another manifestation of deeply internalized racism.
This is the most intellectual drag I’ve ever read.
It’s just laziness.
Whats lazy is you. You didn’t bother to read what was written. Go back and try again.
Oh i read it lol. Lots of intellectual non sense that adds up to it just being laziness.
Dialect and vernacular isn’t a product of laziness. Its verbal needs changing from place to place. Text speech for example, (shortening words and excessive uses of acronyms like “lol, lmao” ) has it’s own dialect and it’s not because of laziness it’s because the point is to try and get the statement out as quickly as possible. Again the only thing lazy here is your drive to learn new things and unlearn some racist beliefs if you ask me.
You just proved my point. “Get the statement out as quickly as possible” because they’re too lazy to use proper language. I’m not even saying it’s a bad thing. I use shortened lingo all the time too. But it’s a product of laziness, not a subject of intellectual analysis.
Also it’s not “the way black people talk”. It’s “the way lazy people talk”. I see people of all races using lazy speech.
I’m responding to the tags for any of my followers who are confused by that last part.
Its not a product of laziness though. Its verbal needs changing. It has it’s own dialect and tone that can flip with incorrect capitalization or emphasis. The grammar is still there; Its just abbreviated. same applies for what was previously stated, AAVE (African American Vernacular )
And clearly you haven’t been paying attention to the topic. This entire subject has been about peoples perception of black ppl talking.
Lol. No.
ok buddy,
you clearly know jack fucking shit about linguistics.
if you were saying this shit in an academic setting, you’d be laughed out of the hall.
like you are such a goddamn embarrassment to everyone reading this, here you are going “lol no” as though you’re actually in a position to dismiss their argument so flippantly.
I think you might want to rethink your life a little, before you continue this weirdass argument of saying that variants in the dialect of a language are somehow “not worthy” of intellectual study,
not to mention the extreme lack of self-awareness right now, you’ve been intellectually studying a shit-ton of “lazy” shortcuts since the fucking first grade, what the hell do you think contractions are?
do you think we shouldn’t study shit like “it’s” anymore? should we all be going “it is”?
Why do you even care about “proper” speech? there is no goddamn proper English, Shakespeare made up the term elbow, for christ’s sake! The English language has CHANGED, and even if it didn’t change, it’s the biggest mess of a language in the entire goddamn universe,
I really can’t fucking believe you’re calling A CONSISTENT GRAMMATICAL RULE lazy, when the whole damn language is too lazy to have a consistent method of pronunciation and spelling! like, HONESTLY.
